Your Little B L A N K Books
As we explore the heart and soul of design, I thought it would be helpful for everyone to take a peak at your library, your coffee table and what's in your bathroom near the toilet. What I'd like to know is what books have/are giving you a glimpse into the heart and soul of design and why. Break them down into three categories:
~ In your library (books read in the past year)
~ Near the toilet (books you are currently reading)
~ On your coffee table (books you will be reading soon but have not started)
Here's a peak at mine:
IN THE LIBRARY
- Tibor Kalman: Perverse Optimist. Read more about my thoughts here>>
- Made You Look. Stefen Sagmeister's design monogram. Read my review here>>
- Worthwhile. A solid magazine about passion and profit. If I could afford a subscription, then Worthwhile would be near the toilet and not the library. Read more here>>
NEAR THE TOILET
- The Cluetrain Manifesto. This book has caused such a significant shift in my thinking about design that I'm in the middle of reviewing all my design processes and ways I interface with clients. I'm going to write a review on this as soon as I finish it. If you could only buy one book this year, this would be my choice.
- FastCompany. Magazine, website and blogs. Always something that gives me a glimpse into the heart and soul of design. Although, for my studio I'd rename it SlowCompany.
- SpeakUp. Always something thoughtful there that provokes me to think more deeply about design.
- Art and Fear by Bayles and Orland. Explores the inner obstacles in a creative person's life. An encouraging little book.
ON THE COFFEE TABLE
- Visual Faith by William Dyrness. A book about engaging culture, art, theology and worship.
- Free Agent Nation by Daniel Pink. A treatise on the shifting work culture in America.
- A Whole New Mind by Daniel Pink. A new book that looks at the move from the Information Age to the Conceptual Age.
Ok. Those are my little B L A N K books. What are yours?

I love lists like this because the unexpected and sometimes fascinating reads are discovered.
In the Library:
The Iliad by Homer. Still one of the most thrilling books I have read. It's poetry of words and ideas is the root of western civilization. Just to read how Achilles horses wept at the death of Petroclus is breathtaking literature.
Stalking Elijah by Rodger Kamenetz. With wit and insight Rodger unveils the secret world of Jewish mysticism in America. His honesty as a man of faith is human and profound.
Bedside Reading:
The Lucifer Principle - A Scientific Expedition into the Forces of History by Howard Bloom. Don't be put off by the title. Bloom investigates the intersection of human biology and history in a fascinating and ingenious way. The hidden side of war and grouping becomes much clearer after this.
The First Man of Rome by Coleen McClough. The story of Sulla. An uncanny sense of being there in Rome and understanding the man.
Bookshelf - An overload of philosophy and theology, including CS Lewis, Plantinga, William Lane Craig, Grudem, McLaren, and too many others to sort right now.
In the Bathroom - William Gibson, "Pattern Recognition"
By the bed - "What to Expect When You're Expecting"
A decided shift from theory to praxis!
Complete Works Shakespeare
Embracing the Mysterious GOD/James Emery White
The Trouble With Jesus
